Stones stacked on top of Polvorillas

According to geological studies, during the Jurassic period, the beginning of a subduction process was seen, a process in which the heavier masses of stone were pushed under the lighter stones. In Chihuahua, ninety million years ago, the encounter between the Farallon plate and our continent forced the so-called Mexican Sea to retreat towards the Gulf of Mexico, a process that would last several million years. These tectonic movements gave rise to a period of intense volcanic activity that extended from the south to what is today the Rio Bravo.

Today, the unusual formations extend throughout the area and it is necessary to explore them with patience to find the most impressive concentration.

Its magic is revealed with all its force at dawn, at dusk, and in the moonlight, when the rocks acquire an unusual eloquence.

Polvorillas lies at the foot of the Sierra del Viruliento, in the municipality of Ojinaga. Traveling from Camargo towards Ojinaga, about 60 km from La Perla, it cuts a dirt road to the right.

The gap runs through El Virulento and, after a 45-kilometer journey, we will find the formations.
