The oldest town in Chihuahua

In 1567 Santa Bárbara was founded, its mines began to produce silver of very good quality, 64 years before “la negrita” was discovered in Parral, which is just 20 minutes from Santa Bárbara. The wealth concentrated in the subsoil of this area has been the subject of countless studies. Its deposits include gold, silver, fluorite and zinc.

Some of History

This area was populated by the original Rarámuris and Tepehuano peoples, when Rodrigo del Rio y Loza, a member of Francisco de Ibarra's expedition, discovered silver in the surrounding hills. Very soon, gambusinos and merchants arrived from the south to benefit from the benefits of the subsoil. By the year 1600, the population had already grown to 7 thousand inhabitants.
In just a few years, Santa Bárbara became the richest town in the north of New Spain.
